Our Why

Our toolkit is designed to change the way civic education is presented by making it more interactive, relatable, and accessible, so that every young person can understand their rights and their power to shape the future.

Many of us have had the opportunity to participate in civic programs that are not equally available to all students across Tennessee. These experiences have helped us better understand how government works and inspired us to share that knowledge with others.

With that in mind, we created a Civic Engagement Toolkit to help young people become more civically educated and informed about how our government functions. The toolkit features interactive simulations on the three branches of government, including the legislative process, Supreme Court decisions, and a mock presidential election. It also includes activities on often-overlooked but equally important topics like gerrymandering and redistricting, local board meetings, the Electoral College, and national political conventions.
