We are collaborators, problem-solvers, and thinkers. We are teachers and students. We are parents, public servants, and policy shapers. We are advocates.
Our issues-based, grassroots community began meeting informally in the fall of 2013 in Nashville. Only a few months later we successfully drafted, lobbied, and passed our first legislation to make Tennessee safer for women and kids. We quickly earned a reputation for acting efficiently, strategically, and collaboratively. All of our projects are guided by our conviction that women and kids in Tennessee deserve to be safe and healthy so that they can have access to opportunity and achieve equality in society.
In our two short years of existence, AWAKE has successfully passed five bills into law, launched a state-wide educational campaign on child abuse prevention, and developed a semester-long curriculum that teaches middle school girls about establishing healthy relationships and financial independence. We accomplished all of this through the dedication of our volunteers who operate this 501(c)(3) in their spare time after work and on weekends. We organize out of a sense of urgency and relentlessly pursue progress for women and kids.
Our core values guide the work we do. We believe in the following for all women and kids across Tennessee:
AWAKE advocates for the advancement of women and kids through education and policy change.
Our strategic approach fosters unique partnerships with organizations, communities & elected officials to ensure that the interests of women and children in Tennessee are heard and addressed.
