2026 Spring advocacy intern
Commitment: January-May 2026; 5-10 hours/week
Compensation: Class Credit
Supervisor: AWAKE Executive Director and Policy & Advocacy Associate
Responsibilities:
Track priority bills on the Tennessee General Assembly website and update the AWAKE 2026 Bill Tracker
Monitor legislative committee meetings and create summaries for AWAKE team
Event planning and execution support for AWAKE’s Day on the Hill
Attend and record notes at the bi-weekly Policy Action Team calls
Support coalition-specific policy and research (AWAKE is part of the following coalitions:
Tennesseans United for Gun Safety, TN Reproductive Justice Coalition, TN Menstrual Equity Coalition, TN Fertility Coalition, TN Coalition for Truth in Our Classrooms, TN Paid Leave Coalition, State Strong, TN Youth Justice Forum, Safe and Free TN- Gun Violence Prevention Steering Committee)
Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student (preferred fields: social work, public policy, political science, women’s and gender studies, sociology, or related).
Familiarity with or willingness to learn the Tennessee General Assembly website and basic legislative processes.
Strong research and writing skills with the ability to summarize complex information clearly and concisely.
Detail-oriented and able to track and organize legislative information accurately.
Reliable and self-motivated, able to complete tasks independently with minimal supervision.
Strong communication skills for note-taking, coalition coordination, and team collaboration.
Professionalism in attending legislative hearings, coalition meetings, and AWAKE events.
