A busy November

November recap: New partnerships, our largest fundraiser, a new board, & looking ahead to 2018!

As this month of gratitude comes to a close, we first want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our members, steering committee, volunteers, and donors. Thank you seems inadequate for all you have done, but please know, we are so appreciative of your time, contributions, & spirit.

Throughout November, we taught our healthy relationships & finances class with a new partner, Junior Achievement, at Antioch Middle to around 15 bright and energetic middle schoolers. The new partnership with JA brought a new focus on planning for future careers (a sports agent, veterinarian, and OBGYN just to name a few!) while continuing to have the important conversations around relationship warning signs, the attributes of healthy relationships, and how to speak up if something doesn’t feel right. We also started a new partnership with End Slavery TN working with 9 women; this unique partnership brought us adult students for the first time, and we are so proud of the time we spent with those women.

We also elected a new board! David Aguilera is our new Membership Director, and Hope Riley is our new treasurer. Sara Beth Myers, Danielle Johns, Andrea Campbell, Ashley Shults, and Elaine Eisinger (new VP) remain on the board and are so excited for the new year!

And the main event of November (and the year really) was Artists for AWAKE. Our largest fundraiser of the year, it’s an opportunity to bid on beautiful art all donated by local artists with all proceeds going to fund our educational and legislative initiatives. And in our second year of this event, we saw more art donations, more attendees, and more donations come in! A total team effort, a special thanks goes out to Michele Lambert and the ladies of Shimai for being our hostesses, corralling our donations, and supplying the Loveless biscuits! Thank you to everyone who attended and donated- it was a huge success, and we are already busy planning next year’s event!

Looking ahead to 2018, we are fired up! We are teaming up to bring our class to six new school sites, will introduce two new bills, will continue our partnership with End Slavery TN, will host another truancy training, & are looking to hire an Executive Director! Whew! That was a lot to even type! We know there is so much work to do, and we plan on being on the front lines of change for women and kids in Tennessee. Be sure to sign up to receive our emails to stay up to date on Lobbying 101 and teacher trainings, our lobbying efforts, and chances to volunteer!
